Military notes for Gilbert Charles HARRIS
Officer in the Welsh Guards until 1919.
Temporary 2nd Lieutenant with Machine Gun Corps.

From David Hatfield HARRIS: Gilbert originally joined the Grenadier Guards - at the time, there was no Welsh Guards - but, in 1915 ( I think) King George V decided to create a new regiment, the Welsh Guards, and volunteers were called from the Grenadiers. According to my recollection, "Gilbert claimed to have been the first man to step forward and so, was the first Welsh Guard!" (Now, get out the salt shaker!) I cannot recall that he ever mentioned serving in France. He was commissioned in the Machine Gun Corps, then served, after the war, in Russia when the communists were busy throwing out the "White Russians" He left the army with the rank of Captain but, to my knowledge, was never commissioned in a guards regiment.
